Film Review: Rock of Ages

Rock of Ages is a musical set in 1980s Hollywood to the soundtrack of some of the era’s classic rock hits, including music from Journey, Guns ‘n’ Roses and Foreigner.

The film follows the story of Sherrie (Julianne Hough), a small town girl who travels to Los Angeles to pursue her dream of becoming a singer. Upon her arrival she befriends Drew (Diego Boneta, previously seen in 90210) a fellow aspiring musician, and together they sing their way through the highs and lows that come with following your dreams.

As well as the standard challenges that come with finding fame and fortune, the wanna be rockers also are up against The Mayor’s wife, Patty (Catherine Zeta-Jones), who thinks that rock music is corrupting the young, and her and her team are fighting to close down the best clubs in Hollywood.

The film also includes Tom Cruise as rocker Stacee Jaxx, Patty’s pet hate, and surprisingly, he really can sing and rock out, and makes a very convincing drugged up, sex addicted rockstar.

The story and soundtrack will leave feeling very good as you exit the cinema, and it sports a whole host of supporting stars including Russell Brand, Alec Baldwin, and Paul Giamatti. It has an amazing soundtrack and is definitely worth a watch if you like your musicals with a sprinkling of glam rock.
