What to Watch in 2013 – Sci-fi movies

PACIFIC RIM

RELEASE DATE: 12th July

STARRING: Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Ron Perlman, Charlie Day

FIRST THOUGHTS: With the trailer looking like a mash-up between Cloverfield and Transformers, Guillermo Del Toro’s long-awaited directorial return, Pacific Rim, has already got many people talking. From initial reports and teasers, this looks to be balls-to-the-wall fun and with a passionate Del Toro behind the camera, it’s hard not to get excited. The film has also amassed an eclectic cast from the always reliable Idris Elba, to comedian Charlie Day, and cult hero Ron Perlman. Will this win any awards? No. Is it CGI, explosive, loud noise nonsense? Yes. But it has robots AND monsters!!

VERDICT: MUST SEE IN THE CINEMA

ELYSIUM

RELEASE DATE: 20th September

STARRING: Jason Bourne  Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley

FIRST THOUGHTS: In 2009, a little-known South African director blew everyone away with his film District 9. With a modest budget, Neil Blomkamp embarrassed the whole of Hollywood with his stunning CGI. 4 years later hes teamed up with Matt Damon for Elysium. The film documents a dystopian future where the wealthy ruling class live on a man-made space station whilst the poor reside on Earth. Matt Damon plays a man who strives to bring equality between these two worlds. The plot sure sounds intriguing and it’ll be interesting to see what Blomkamp does with a budget 4x larger than the one he had for District 9.

VERDICT: WAIT FOR A TRAILER AND MORE NEWS
