Book review: Numerous by Kelly Rogers

It’s been a while since I’ve read a novel from a female author without it having fifty shades to it or leaving me questioning what counts for romance these days. What makes Kelly Rogers stand out amongst such writers as E.L.James and Sylvia Day, is the fact that she proves you do not need sex to write a good novel. Agreed, in James’ and Day’s terms sex sells but push beyond that and you’ll find that a gripping story is a great story, then just sit back and let your imagination do the rest.

“Numerous is a complex and layered thriller. Move over Dan Brown, there’s a new kid in town.”

Numerous combines ancient history, a near 1000 year old prophecy with the very real life modern day threat we face today – terrorism. I’m not a history buff myself and have never really been interested in the subject (leave the past in the past and all that) but the pairing with the context and the content made for an exciting and chair-gripping thriller.

The story follows Laura across three countries as she battles to unravel the truth behind a too close for comfort stalker. The grisly murder of a family friend, solving the mysterious numbers the killer left behind and saving the life of her father, all whilst fighting for her own survival as the killers go to the ends of the Earth (almost literally) to ensure the prophecy is seen through, makes for a complex but intriguing plot.

What makes Numerous different from other books is the structure and involvement around the historical facts that make the story come alive. St Malachy’s prophecy of the Popes and some say the end of the world, lies within the Vatican to this very day and predicts that doomsday will be upon us when the current Pope dies and the next and last predicted Pope becomes the Holy See. What’s more is that after the (slightly embarrassing) failure of the Mayan prophecy, everyone around the world will be seeking the next doomsday prediction, and here it is lying within Numerous.

An unexpected and exhilarating journey, I read the novel in a matter of days, as page after page the suspense was too much and I simply couldn’t bear to put it down. Numerous really does have something for everyone whether it’s romance, murder, mystery, crime, religion or conspiracy. Rogers is a self published author, (having parted company with her literary agent) proving that you don’t need a big shot publisher to write a great story. Although Numerous is not available in print form, it is available on Kindle and other eReader products for you to enjoy.
