Has England missed out on a star in Lewis Holtby?

England throughout the recent years has missed that young playmaker that could spark a team into life. There have been many stars that have been labelled as the next big thing for the national side but have England and the FA missed a glorious chance to help fix the teams woes?

Lewis Holtby was born in Erkelenz, Germany to a German Mother and an English father. He was raised as an Everton fan and has said he dreamt of playing for England as a child. After rising through the ranks in Germany he began to shine at Schalke FC. In January 2013 Holtby signed for Tottenham Hotspur, and is aiming to show the skills he possesses in a league with a lot more pressure and exposure. Holtby has great passing abilities, clever movement and the ability to ignite a team into winning those long and tough games, exactly what England need.

As Holtby father is English, Holtby qualified to play for the national side but was never given a call up and later was given a cap for Germany which rules him out of ever playing for England. Will this be a decision England will later regret? Time will tell, but this does bring to light an important question.

Should England’s scouting system be improved to look for player such as Holtby?

These are questions which the FA needs to address before they miss another potential star. The next few months many eyes will be watching Holtby and a few will hope he doesn’t come back to haunt the national team.

From all this another big question arises should players born and raised in another country be allowed to play for a different country because of his parent’s origin of birth?
