5 Reasons David Moyes should get the United Job

You may not believe this but Sir Alex Ferguson IS in fact human. The 71 year old still looks like he is at the prime of his life as he continues to get the job done as manager of Manchester United. But there will come a time when he will have to step down to allow the next breed of managers to have a stab at keeping United at the summit of the Premier League.

Jose Mourinho has come out as the favorite to replace the great Scott. Mourinho’s CV as a manager is outstanding, winning the top league in 4 different countries, having won the Champions League with two different teams and managed some of the best players in the world. But his transfer policies, academy policies, media handling and personal ambitions may not be the skills the United officials are after! That’s where David Moyes comes in. Here are 5 reasons why united may choose another Scotsman as Ferguson’s successor:

#5 The British Connections

Few would have thought that when a young Ferguson was appointed as manager of United, in 1986, he would do even half as well as he has. Moyes carries that same ambitious spark. That Scottish mentality of fighting to the bitter end to overcome his critics! United have only ever had one “non British” manager, and he was an Irishman in the early 70s. So why change that? High profile, foreign managers have had success in the Premier League but ask Chelsea fans how having an endless string of managers from around the world has worked out for them. Moyes knows the Premier League and speaks the language. He is also loyal having spent 11 years at Everton making him the third longest standing manager at a club in the Premier league. A perfect combination of attributes for a United manager candidate.

#4 Media Management

United are so highly respected in the footballing world for how they manage situations around the club. They keep things simple when handling the media. A manager like Mourinho could be detrimental to this with his status – an erratic personality could land the club in hot water during one of his famous post match interviews. Every manager has outbursts about referees or other managers but Moyes is one of few who rarely shows this side. He remains passionate about decisions and his players but regularly keeps his emotions in check. One would say he does this better than Fergie who is known to have a couple of controversial comments under his belt.

#3 He is a manager of men

Moyes is highly respected at Everton and that is mainly because he respects his players and staff. He will defend his players from criticism whilst still being aware of mistakes they make. He’s an honest manager who will let his players and fans know when his team have under performed and will be the first person to heap praise upon them when they play well. He keeps his players in check; you rarely see bad press about Everton players. Clearly there is a mutual repect at Everton and Moyes is at the heart of it.

# 2 Worked wonders with Everton

Everton are not a rich club. Moyes has been working on a next to nothing budget since his appointment in 2002 but yet Everton remain competitive, regularly chasing down that European competition spot. Moyes has worked wonders in the transfer market bringing in England internationals Lescott, Jagielka and Baines for less than £18 million. Tim Cahill was signed from Millwall for pennies and just remember how many goals he scored. Fellaini is another name that Moyes has brought to the club and performed. His transfer policy is outstanding and Everton have now leapfrogged rivals Liverpool in the league and remain a top side that other teams fear.

#1 Moyes has a Ferguson-esque management style

Moyes is ambitious, determined, has a never say die attitude and is a great man manager. He knows how to get the best out of his players just like Fergie has been doing every year at United. Moyes is liked by the media, rarely getting into controversial situations. He is a fan of a good academy. Moyes has seen many great players come through the ranks at Everton; Wayne Rooney the biggest name. Moyes keeps his team full of British players keeping faith that home grown talent should and will prevail in the Premier League. He knows how to take a defeat. Again like Ferguson, Moyes will be honest and tell his players that they played badly, that they didn’t deserve a win.

There are many reasons why David Moyes should get the United job – whether he actually does is up to United and Alex Ferguson, but here’s hoping they make the right choice. Perhaps it’s a big gamble, but I’m sure that’s what was said when the current manager was appointed all those years ago.
