Sling fitness training: Scary or fun?

A couple of days ago I tried the (not so) new fitness trend at the market: sling fitness training.

Yeah, I know I’m a bit of a latecomer to this sling training party, but to be honest; the word in itself is a bit terryfying.

However, when my local gym announced they had started up with these classes, I found no reason not to go and give it a try. And so I went – with no clue what it was all about. The ropes hanging down from the ceiling in pegs looked as scary as I had imagined they to be beforehand. However, as the instructor started explaining how we were going to use these ropes, I realised I had been afraid for nothing. It was exactly the same as using normal ropes (well, only thing different being that they are hanging from the ceiling…)

Slings have been used for balance recovering in hospitals since year 1900, but has not been used as a form of fitness at gyms until recently. We used the slings for a variety of different sets which shall improve your ability to use your own body weight when working out. It is a hard class, and you can choose exactly how much resistance you want. However, the most important in sling fitness is the technique – so be prepared to feel a bit clumsy at the first two classes.

We focused on thighs, legs, biceps, triceps and hamstrings, and I am not being modest when I say that this 45 minutes long work out made me stiff in muscles I didn’t even know existed in my body. It is ridicilous – I am even struggling to tie my own shoes!

If your gym has sling training classes, I would definitely recommend you to try it out. It’s fun, it’s challenging and anybody can do it, no matter how good – or bad – shape you find yourself in at the moment. Here is one friendly tip though if you do decide to go: STRETCH OUT PROPERLY STRAIGHT AFTER THE SESSION! Otherwise you will be walking like a granny for days.

PLUS FOR: Improving core muscles and challenging your balance.

MINUS FOR: Having to plank for a long, long time. (Jokes, I actually can’t find anything negative.)
