Say Hello To Kids Of ’91!

I happened upon Kids Of ’91 through the wonders of social networking and ever since have been a massive fan of their music. With a fresh take on rap, the boys have already notched up over 11,000 YouTube views for their official introduction video to debut EP ‘The Arrival’! I caught up with Myron and Chris to find out more about the cheeky duo, what they have in store for fans during 2013 and why you should download their fantastic EP!

Q. Who are Kids Of ’91?

We are an up and coming duo. We would say that we are two normal 21-22 year olds that enjoy to live life to the fullest and express that through our music. That is what is real to us. We have been friends since the age of 3 and have been making music together since the age of 13, originally from the grime scene, so decided to develop our sound when we caught the ears of Agent X 3 years ago. They have really helped develop us so far!

Q. How would you describe your sound?

Hmmm…well we have been compared to Rizzle Kicks for the “fun factor” and the fact that we are a similar (and we stress the similar!) looking duo. We would say our sound is fun, up beat and up lifting (mostly electro). Our sound is different because we don’t feel that a lot of artists in our UK scene give what we are offering. At the same time we are not trying to claim that we are “ground breaking”, we’re just having fun with it really and enjoying ourselves.

Q. What makes you different from current music in the charts?

Really, the integration between our verses which we feel we could hold their own with a lot of rappers our there, as well as the universal sounding hooks we provide. We are trying to cater for all while still staying true and it is hard to find that balance. A lot of artists begin in their specific movement and when they build a fan base, and  its time to make “chart music”, find the transition difficult. So I suppose we could say ours does not sound forced.

Q. You’ve just released your debut EP, ‘The Arrival’. What kind of response have you got back from fans and music lovers?

Yeah, so far positive thank you! Obviously as indie artists with music that is not of a niche market, it is hard to gain the attention of a lot of listeners who are dedicated to their specific scene. We are working hard on increasing its exposure and feel it’s just a matter of time before we start turning a few heads!

Q. What’s your favourite track on there and why?

Tough one! If weI had to choose it would be ‘Doing Me’. We just feel it’s the most ear catching track on the album, both vocally and instrumentally. We love the concept of the record and it really sums us up, while still putting across a positive message.

Q. Which musicians, alive or dead, have influenced you musically?

Chris: I will be honest, I dislike when most people do interviews and start mentioning all the greats just to appear noble, when their music is in a total different direction. In terms of influence I like to stay current and look at an artist’s position I would like to reach and respect the way in which they have achieved it. So for me at the moment, im a huge fan of Mac Miller for his videos, concepts and even his reality TV show! UK artiststs such as Tinie Tempah too, although Dappy and Calvin Harris are  the most talented, hands down.

Myron: I’d like to say MJ but I think it’s a bit predictable. I wouldn’t say he’s influenced me but he’s been a massive inspiration. As far as influence goes, it would have to be a mixture between Jay-z, Justin Timberlake and Timberland (together) and Calvin Harris. They all make music that I can relate to at different times.

Q. You took part in your own YouTube series, where you both completed Man Vs Food style challenges. Which one did you enjoy filming the most?

Yeah, that was great fun! The Electric Shock challenge was a lot of fun. Being able to put each other through pain is something we’ve both probably secretly wanted to do for a while! But most enjoyable was the ‘Top Golf Goldman challenge, just for the taste of the food. Well…the first 6 minutes at least!

Q. How important has social media been for you, in terms of getting your music out there?

Massively! Social media is so influential in the current market. I would say, however, it has its pros and cons. It is over saturated with lots of material and the listeners are becoming immune to being marketed too. I would also say that people used to complain about the major market monopoly but money is still key and a lot of artists who have financial backing, whether it be personal or label, still have a massive upper hand as bloggers are trying to earn a profit!

Q. What is the plan for Kids Of ’91 in the future?

More music! We need to get out and start gigging again too. There really are no rules any more. Obviously you set goals but the way in which you plan to reach them change every day. More online videos are on the cards and another challenge series in the near-ish future too!

Q. If you had to give people a reason to download your (FREE!) EP, what would it be?

Because it is FREE! No really, we have put a lot of hard work into ‘The Arrival’ and we really do think that if you like the current sound, there is something in there for everyone. With Agent X UKG and hit song writing  influence, mixed with our energy on the verses and our added fun factor, it really is a nice vibe! Here’s the fantastic introduction video to debut EP ‘The Arrival’. If this isn’t a good enough reason to download the release, I really don’t know what is!
