Top 10 Reasons we Love Katy Perry, Unconditionally

Katy Perry’s recent win for best Female at the MTV European Music Awards held in Amsterdam this year comes as no surprise. Her performance of her new single, Unconditionally, had her suspended in the air, wrapped in colourful fabric creating a picturesque scene as she emerged from her cocoon. The teaser of the video has been released and there is no doubt that it will be topping the charts soon. This brings me to the question- is it the singer or the song? Do we love her music because it is that good, or are we just captivated by the charm and grace of Katy Perry? We love Katy Perry, unconditionally and that is why we love her music.  Here is a list of reasons providing the evidence of why we continue to dote on her.

1. She is not a blonde. (Well, almost).

Although Katy Perry is a natural blonde, her dark locks, which she dyes regularly, are quite refreshing. She presents the image of a leading lady who does not conform to the picture of blonde hair and blue eyes which has saturated media. If anything, she is more of a knight than a damsel in distress. Her beauty carries a message which shows individuals all over the world that flawlessness and perfection does not make one beautiful.

2.  She is the girl next door.

Speaking of beauty, her goofy sense of humour makes her that much likeable and relatable to the awkward teenage girl, coming into her own. Guys want to date her; girls want to be her friend. Despite the fame, her good heart keeps her grounded and she continues to contribute to charitable causes. She managed to take a trip to Madagascar with UNICEF earlier this year, taking the time to learn about the realities of poverty that children have to face daily.

3.  She sings anthems, not songs.

With hits like Firework, Roar and Part of Me, one would expect to see an army standing beside her, ready to take on the world. Her songs communicate hope that empowers people to achieve greatness. This clearly sets her apart from the current twerkers, murdering music.

4. She brought back the 90’s.

Who could ever forget that awesome Last Friday Night video? Throw a party with the Hanson’s and everyone is back in their happy place. No doubt the tracks on her latest album, Prism, carry a pop 90’s tone without alienating the Gen Y adult. Her favourite style may be vintage but lately she has been dabbling in 90’s fashion.  The nostalgia of her sound and style would make anyone a new Katy Cat.

5. She is a British citizen.

After marrying Russell Brand Katy Perry applied for dual citizenship and was duly awarded months later.   Although colonialism practically destroyed nations and is the underlying reason for most of the economic and social problems most countries struggle with today, we must admit; tea time, fancy hats, fish ’n chips, soccer hooligans and Graham Norton’s red chair are quite fascinating.

6. She has loved and lost and loved again.

There is life after love, and thereafter room for more love. Most of us watched the documentary detailing the breakdown of her marriage. Even though she had to face divorce flames publicly, she rose from the ashes like a Phoenix with new life and inspiration for her music. Also, John Mayer, yum.

7.  She’s winning (not the Charlie Sheen way).

The recipient of many awards, she clearly is versatile as a singer and actress and has been asked to model (with a body that rocks, it is no wonder). She can hit a note, and busts a move that would defy all stereotypes about white girls dancing. She has a winning smile to accompany that winning streak. Having 10 singles at number one within five years of being in the industry, there must be more to come.

8.  She’s All In

Although Katy Perry was part of the All In brand campaign for ADIDAS, this point is rather about her genuine love for music. She has the talent and the knowledge to back it up. I am talking about her devotion to channeling Freddy Mercury in her heart. This girl knows her music.

9.  She made cats look cool.

Not many people are cat lovers, but Katy’s fondness for cats constantly springs up. She uses her cats as cameos in music videos, talks about them in interviews (not in the annoying way a celebrity talks about his or her children). Her cats have inspired two of her fragrances and it is no coincidence that she chose Roar as her first single off her latest album.

10.  Queen of her kingdom.

Business woman, philanthropist, talented artist and voice of a generation; our generation. Watching Katy Perry rule her own world inspires us to take charge of our lives too. We love Katy Perry, because she makes it easier to believe that we can achieve our own dreams.
