Making money from movie posters

When you moved into your halls of residence, you probably headed out and purchased a few posters in an attempt to spruce up the bare walls of your bedroom. But have you ever considered that posters could help you make your fortune?

Okay, so your cute dog poster or your semi-naked celebrity one probably won’t be worth much a few years down the line, but movie posters could be. Many posters advertising some of the world’s most iconic films have made a fortune when they were put up for auction.

Just take a look at this article from The Guardian to see for yourself. It documents the ten highest selling movie posters of all time; topping the pole is the international poster for Metropolis, which fetched an unbelievable $690,000 dollars when it went to auction. Surprisingly enough, the winning bid was said to be from Leonardo Di Caprio!

As you can see, there is a lot of money to make from something as simple as movie posters. To help you on your quest for riches, we’ve compiled this handy guide of top tips.

Visit charity shops

Many people don’t realise the worth of movie posters and throw them out the moment they fail to fit in with their interior design plan. You can unearth some hidden gems and treasures in charity shops and car boot sales. If you’re lucky enough to find one, you could pick up the key to your future fortune for just a few pounds.

Get it valued

If you do think you’ve found a winner, it’s always worth to get them checked out by an expert. As you will already know from attending the university poster sale, reprints of movie posters are common.

To ensure you get the very best service, you should use a reputable company. You may have heard of Value My Stuff before, as they were invested in by the Dragons of the Dragon’s Den. They are a specialist antiques valuers, so you know that their valuation will be fair.

Keep it safe

This one seems a bit obvious, but it is really important that you keep your poster safe. Think of it this way; you wouldn’t leave thousands of pounds lying around your home, so why would you do it to a poster that could be worth just that much?

Like all antiques, if your poster becomes ripped or damaged it could seriously affect how much it is worth. Investing in some poster tubes, like these from eBay, or frames could help prevent this from happening.

Pester the cinemas

Some of the highest selling posters are vintage ones, but there is no reason why you can’t pick up a poster now as a future investment. Who knows, in a few years’ time, your Monster’s University poster could be worth a bit of cash.

If you’re like most students, you will spend a considerable portion of your time at the cinema. Why not ask them next time you’re there if they have any movie posters going spare? Usually, they’ll be only too happy to dish them out to movie fans instead of throwing them away.
