What’s Really Important…My Key to Happiness

Lately in the city, I have paid more attention to the things around me. Sometimes we all just need a reminder to slow down because it’s so easy to get caught up in the stress of the day and just go through the motions, not really living, but just coasting along. It’s really the little things that make a big difference when it comes to happiness.

I have noticed lately that 90% of my friends have been sad and depressed for one reason or another, especially this winter. Whether it’s relationships or their career, they feel that something is lacking. It’s so easy to get caught up in these feelings. The key to avoiding this is to choose to be happy. Once you choose to be happy and to avoid all of the negative feelings and just live for the moment, that is when good things truly come. It may sound cheesy, but it is so true. I also know that this is easier said than done, but I have done it and so can anyone else. People are drawn towards someone who is positive and happy. I meet new people on almost a daily basis, and I honestly believe that it’s because of the mind set that I have. I’m not perfect, and I have my days where I’m feeling down, but on those days I feel so alone and I can see the difference that it makes.

What a lot of people need to realise, is that they don’t NEED anyone but themselves. You are strong and you can handle anything. I have struggled to get a stable job, and there were times when I was miserable at a job thinking that I would never get out. But, I kept getting out and moving up because I chose to believe that I would. The saying that you can’t be happy with anyone else, until you are happy with yourself couldn’t be more accurate. I was lucky enough to meet this inspirational person, and whenever I am doubting things I know that I can go to him and he will put them into perspective for me. He taught me how to meditate, which I thought was funny at first, but he said “when you open this door, you will see everything in this room that makes you happy.” I was struggling financially, so I thought I would see money. But I pictured my family, cat, and friends. (Yes, I am a cat lady.) And he said, “money is nothing, it’s not real. What’s real is what you see.” I couldn’t agree with this more. If you have health and people that care about you, then you are already successful.

Another thing (this is my biggest downfall), is that I let other people affect me. I always want to please everyone and never want anyone to be mad at me. But, this is impossible and becomes exhausting. Someone told me recently, “Don’t worry about anything else around you unless it’s benefiting you.” Sometimes you have to keep this in mind and focus more on yourself, or else you will be like me and wear yourself out worrying about other people’s problems and doing what everyone else wants you to do.

So, I guess the point of writing this article is to remind you that you already have what you need to be happy. Never rely on anything or anyone else for your happiness. Also, slow down, so that you don’t ever miss out on a person or opportunity that is around you.
