The Walking Dead is Back!

I wanted to wait until I had seen a couple of the new Season 4 episodes before diving into a review of the return of The Walking Dead.

Season 4 split for that mid-season break, that American shows tend to love these days, with a hugely exciting episode. (WARNING: If you haven’t seen the first 8 episodes of season 4 look away, although you really should have by now)

The Governor arrived at the prison, locked and loaded with only one aim, to kill Rick and take over his kingdom. He was prepared to die to achieve his goal and was not going to let anyone stand in his way; He had a TANK for heavens sake!

Getting side tracked here, long story short the prison was destroyed, Hershel lost his head and Michonne took her revenge on the Governo and a whole bunch of nobodies are dead as well.

Our friends escaped but are now scattered with nowhere to go.  It’s back to square one for Rick and the gang, finding somewhere safe, finding ammo and finding the people they have suffered so much with.

The great thing about this return is with the split in the group, characters that barely interacted before are now forced to defend each other and we begin to see different dimensions in the characters.

Beth has really come into her own as she was forced to watch her father beheaded (uncleanly might I add) and she’s been split from her sister Maggie. Lucky she finds herself with the man, the legend that is Daryl Dixson. She is now more ruthless and we don’t see that frightened child we saw when we first met her.

Carl, now Carl is something different. I remember him being one of my most hated characters back in the farm but he has grown into a great character that has been through so much and is still going strong. In the return, we find him having to look after Rick after his punning from the Governor.

Carl still shows the qualities he had as child but he is more mature, more fearless and willing to do things his way. Now thats my kind of character. There was almost (and i’m sure there may be a backlash for saying this) a Shane-esk quality to Carl in these episodes. That “survival of the fittest” mentality that is needed to survive in a post apocalyptic world.

Greg Nicotero has done a stellar job directing the return and as long as the show carries on in the same direction, with this amount of character development and excitement at every turn  then there is absolutely no reason The Walking Dead should come to a halt.

It’s now down to the writers to keep us hooked.

I’m rooting for them!
