Croatia: A hidden gem

Do you want to explore a little bit of the world, need a short break and some sunshine or just a good time with friends? Are you a little tired of the same old holidays to Spain, Tenerife and Greece, and want to try something a little different?

Well you’ve come to the right place. Croatia, in all its beauty, is an ideal and unique place for you to explore and at great value. I stumbled upon the amazing capital city of Zagreb last year and I haven’t stopped dreaming of going back ever since. If I had to give one valuable piece of advice to anyone who loves to explore new cultures and unique surroundings, it would be to go and visit Croatia. It is, in my opinion, so underrated that when I first experienced the country, I was utterly breath taken and in complete awe. Here are three great reasons why you should consider hopping on a flight to this beautiful place at the crossroads of Central Europe, Southeast Europe and the Mediterranean.

1. The value. The currency is Croatian kuna, which works out at about £1 = 9 Kuna. The first thing which surprised me when I was there wasn’t the blazing hot sunshine and gorgeous views – which I hadn’t heard much about before – but it was the prices of things. One of the best things about Croatia, as if it isn’t already amazing, is that it’s ridiculously cheap. I was instantly happier on my first day when I ordered a litre of beer and after working it out in British sterling I realised that it cost just 80p! It wasn’t just the drinks, but food, bus rides and a day shopping, all cost next to nothing. So not only can you explore and relax in a way you never have before, you also don’t have to worry about money and indulging in the things you love. If you’re on a budget, this sure is the place to go.

2. The weather. During the summer months from June to September see about 10 to 12 hours of sunshine per day and temperatures in the mid to high 20’s. The heat is beautiful and the many markets open throughout the day selling fresh fruit and providing fresh free drinking water allows you to see the attraction of the country. Many big cities have a lake a short bus ride away where tourists go and relax for the day and indulge in a sunbath and a swim or an ice-cream to cool down. The utter beauty and innocence of the place. Local markets everywhere where you can buy cheap food and go exploring.

3. The sights. If you go to Zagreb, Plitvice national park is a must-must-must see. It is one of the most beautiful and natural places I have seen and the clear blue water and stunning waterfalls are sure to take your breath away. There is a wide variety of animal and bird species for visitors to come across, whether it is one of the wild brown bears or the dice snake. You can stay in the bungalows at Campsite Korana, which is just a bus ride from the national park. The bungalows are more like large, modern huts and add an adventurous feel to your stay. On the evenings, you can go to the large outdoor bbq, restaurant or bar to relax after your day of exploration.
