4 Ways To Make A Small Space Feel Larger

Making an impact in a small space can sometimes feel impossible. There are several things that condo living owners can do to their home to make it feel larger than it actually is. There is no need to feel cramped and claustrophobic in a space when a lot of style designs are low cost and easily achieved within a weekend of a redesign.

4 Things You Can Do to Create More Space in Your Home

  • Make the most out of the space you have
  • Reduce the clutter
  • Light and bright goes a long way
  • Neutrals are natural

Make the Most Out Of the Space You Have

If you have tight living and sleeping quarters, you may feel a bit overwhelmed by things as simplistic as doors. If your entranceway is immediately met with closet doors or a bathroom door that swings outward, you are limited on artistic touches you can add to the space to make it feel trendy and less like a meeting place for doors upon entrance. This is actually easily solved.

One of the newest trends takes a modern farmhouse approach to the dated pocket door. Decades ago people used pocket doors because they were compact and slid into walls. These were often dreary looking and left somethings to be desired. Barn doors hung with the best barn door hardware will bring an artistic touch to your tiny quarters. These doors slide on a track that is hung outside of the doorframe. The track can be any hue of metal and the door can have interesting metal hardware attached to make it really stand out. These glide effortlessly to close closets, bathrooms, or bedrooms and eliminate the swing radius standard doors utilise. These also double as statement pieces that make the wall less boring. In tight places, these can replace the need for extra wall décor because the door itself is a statement piece.

Reduce the Clutter

One of the most important things to remember when living in a smaller space is less is more. You do not want to fill your condo with useless clutter. This will only make the space feel smaller than it actually is. Furnish your condominium with only what you need and nothing more. If the space comfortably allows dining space for four but a table for six would require guests to move the table or pull the table out, then opt for the table for four.

The same is true for furniture. Reclining sofas can be comfortable, but once extended, a lot of space is utilised. If the living space is tight then a sectional would be best. The added bonus to a sectional is the fact that you can continually move the pieces around and redesign your space. Rather than purchasing books and amassing a library shelf full of books in your living space, consider a digital reading device that can store hundreds of books or visit your local library and simply borrow. Books and movies are two of the most collected and held onto items in most homes.

Light and Bright Goes a Long Way

A small space will instantly feel smaller when it is dark and accented with dark touches. The first thing you should do in your condominium is replace the window treatments if the space seems dark. Hang curtains on a rod that is mounted closer to the ceiling. This will give the illusion that the ceiling is higher than it actually is. Use light fabric that is also soft in colour tone. A heavy fabric will feel stiff and uncomfortable.

A soft fabric that is white, beige, light gray or a lightly patterned design will create an artistic flair and a lighter atmosphere in your space. If you still need privacy, you can have shades in the window and only pull them down when necessary. Lighten up dark flooring with a neutral or light-coloured throw rug. Utilise essential oils in a diffuser, use candles, or another favourite scent method to keep the space smelling fresh if you are unable to open the windows.

Neutrals Are Natural

In addition to utilising light-coloured curtains and rugs, also paint your walls neutral. Dark walls in small spaces will only make the space feel smaller. You can easily change your style with the trends by having your walls naturally painted in neutral tones such as soft gray, white, or tan. Light yellow, soft rose, moss green, and mushroom tones are also savvy neutrals that blend easily with any trends you incorporate.
