Why being rich and famous isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be

When I was growing up, more often than not the majority of people wanted to be a celebrity. To be able to receive free goodies, to walk the red carpet, mingle with the stars, have bucket loads of money and to always go on 5* holidays; it seemed like the perfect lifestyle.

These days, it’s plainly obvious to see that money doesn’t always buy you happiness. How many celebrities have succumbed to the drugs/drink/police mug shot routine? They continuously gush about how wonderful their lives are in magazine photo shoots, to then only three months later be seen checking into rehab for depression.

I must admit that when I was younger, I yearned for their lifestyle. Who wouldn’t? I thought it was all hearts, flowers and free clothes. Celebrities can afford to buy anything they want, they can travel to the most expensive places abroad, buy a house for a ridiculous price and it doesn’t even leave a dent in their purse. I was jealous back then, and I still am if I’m being honest.

But then you delve in deeper and you see that not everything is what it seems. Young actresses and singers are pressured into being a certain size, and are made to feel like a freak if they dare to be over a size 10. Take Demi Lovato as the perfect example; she had it all. The success, the money, the lifestyle, the celebrity friends.

But behind her perfect smile lay a thousand untold stories. She was depressed and self harming, she felt alone and pressured to look like the perfect Hollywood star, and she was also suffering from anorexia and bulimia. She checked herself into rehab, and now has to live with everything she dealt with for the rest of her life. For a young girl, that’s a hell of a lot to deal with.

Suddenly, the ‘perfect’ celebrity lifestyle doesn’t seem so perfect anymore. Just because your favourite actress may have the life you could only dream about, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s always plain sailing. Do they see their family and friends every day? Do they get to hang out at the beach and go shopping from time to time? The answer is no.

They are constantly hounded by the paparazzi, followed constantly by fans and 9 times out of 10 they are stalked at their houses by crazed lunatics begging to be their friends. As I’m going into the magazine industry, I read a lot of magazines and newspapers. I see everything that happens with my favourite celebrities, and it makes me think; am I still jealous of their lifestyle?

I can safely say that there is no way in a million years I would swap my life for theirs. I love reading about them, about what they get up too and I’ll admit I sometimes still get jealous when I see various celebs going to Bora Bora and drinking cocktails, but apart from that I don’t yearn for anything else, and that’s just how I like it.
