Lloris to serve as backup to Friedel… For now

Lloris has to settle as Friedel’s backup for now

Tottenham Hotspur boss Andre Villas-Boas has said that deadline day signing Hugo Lloris, who was meant to displace current number one Brad Friedel, will serve as backup to the American stopper on the back of a world class performance in the home draw with Norwich City.Lloris was drafted in to provide a younger long term option in goal for Spurs, but Friedel, who is 41 years old, is not letting go of his starting spot without a fight. AVB recognises the quality in the ageing American keeper, and knows that Lloris may be in for a long wait.

“Brad is doing extremely well and deserves to be playing and he’ll continue to do so. He knows the situation. We had to take this decision bearing in mind that we are building for the future. So we decided to bring in Hugo now.” Villas-Boas told the Daily Mail, giving Friedel a nod for his performances at the start of the season.

It is a situation no manager wants to be in. A brand new signing, captain of his country and have him only in reserve. AVB has controlled the situation well, and it seems that Lloris himself understands the situation. Being in a new country, a tougher league and a tougher fight for a starting spot with one of the best ‘keepers in the league, Lloris has to contend with Friedel for now…
