Fashion on Film

The slick silver screen has the capacity to make not just a star of its actresses, but a fashion icon too. From Audrey Hepburn and Kierra Knightley, via Farrow and Deneuve, some of Hollywood’s most successful stars owe a lot to their twinkling on-screen style. But what of the transcending nature of these award-winning wardrobes? Whether you’re a cinephile or fashion fan, brush up on this seasons hottest trends by taking notes from our favourite iconic looks.

Easily the best dress on film in the naughties, this floor-sweeping, slinky ’40s evening gown by designer Jacqueline Durran had audiences green with envy. Keira Knightley wore this tantalizing emerald backless number with spaghetti straps, a wide gathered waistband, high front-slit and perforated neckline in the Atonement’s super-sexy scene against the bookshelf with James McAvoy. A jewel of a gown, it is not only enough to make us renew our library cards but to inspire our style this season. From lime to lizard, petrol to woodland – not quite 50 shades of green, but thereabouts – green is this Autumns go-to colour. Don’t get the green eyed monster, get inspired!

Sharon Stone’s all-white outfit in this unforgettable scene is a fashion triumph when translated into today’s trends. Sharon Stone perfected minimalist, ’90s chic in this crisp, racer front shift dress with a high roll-neck and oversized coat in Basic Instinct. Made of winter-white wool crepe by Ellen Mirojnick, its innocent colour proves we can all wear white after labour day. Ditch LBDs this Winter because its all about LWDs (little white dresses).

Who didn’t go gaga over this Katherine Hepburn look? The on-style red tweed with leather details? Old school class and vibrancy, so much so that you immediately wish you are wearing red lipstick when this pops onscreen. This Autumn is all about the need-for-tweed and prim and proper English roses. This fall, make that tweed fashion investment and be inspired by the current tweed trend. Don’t be afraid of colour and create your own Channel look no matter what age you are.

Think Lady GaGa and pop divas nation wide dripping in peek-a-boo rip-offs of the Thierry Mugler, strappy stunner that Demi Moore donned as Diana Murphy in Indecent Proposal. I’m sure you’ve seen cut-out dresses and mesh inserted ensembles sweeping across the high street stores. High on gothic glamour and rich with suggestion fleshed-out dresses offer a sleek take on autumn’s new decadent air.

That Twenties fashion bug has been gently simmering ever since we learnt that The Great Gatsby – that legendary jazz-age tale by F. Scott Fitzgerald – was to get a Baz Luhrmann makeover, complete with Carey Mulligan as Miss Daisy Buchanan. But nothing is transcending more perfectly this Winter than 1920’s glitz and glam in the shape of sequin maxis, pearl and embellished jewellery and regal gold tones.

There’s one accessory that was ruling the runway for fall – and since the winter chill has already crept in get a jump start on the fall fur trend. The fur stole has been everywhere, and whether you choose to wear the real thing or go faux, take your cue from Marlene Dietrich. One of Marlene Dietrich’s most iconic film looks is taken from Desire: this fur-lined dressing gown was created by designer Travis Banton, who did her first movie costumes at Paramount.

A Single ManWith fashion designer Tom Ford as the director, the wardrobe for A Single Man was always going to wow. He asked legendary Hollywood stylist Arianne Phillips to do the costumes – with Julianne Moore’s monochrome house dress as the stand-out piece. From Jackie-O silhouettes to form-fitting wiggle dresses, monochrome panelled dresses are the top trend this season.

Cher and Dionne from CluelessWe can learn a thing or two from our not-so Clueless 90’s girlfriends Cher and Dionne because, while not this garish, plaid and tartan is back with a vengeance this fall. And with the 90’s crawling back into our closets – feathered pens and retina-burning tartan you loved the first time around is back to tartan up your look.

Prints are going fifty shades of psychedelic in a homage to our favourite funny-man, Austin Powers. Eye-popping psychedelic prints were all over the autumn catwalks like ’70s wallpaper at grandma’s house. Though we recommend taking the less-is-more approach by investing in an elegant blouse that’ll go with everything.
