Top Five Must-See Museums in Chicago

Chicago is a vibrant city in its own right. It has the hustle and bustle of a big metropolis while still carrying that Midwestern charm everyone adores. And while there are many things to do and see around the city, here is a list of the five museums that you can’t miss while you’re in the Windy City.

5. Museum of Science and Industry

Let your inner kid out and have some fun! Located in Hyde Park, the largest science museum in the Western Hemisphere has had exhibits including MythBusters and Dr. Seuss in the past, and are always finding new ways to bring wild, wacky and sometimes unbelievable exhibits to the museum. It is a very interactive museum, which is probably why it is so kid-friendly. However, even if you’re going as an adult, there’s always something new to see. Plus, you’re guaranteed to learn a fun science fact or two (impress your friends!).

4. Chicago History Museum

This museum is one of the best ways to get to know the city you’re visiting. Nestled in the downtown area, this historic landmark is home to millions of pieces of Chicago’s history. This museum is definitely the perfect place to go if you’re into history and architecture, but it can be a little dry if history isn’t your thing–The Field Museum is probably the best alternative in that case.

3. Shedd Aquarium

On the coast of Museum Campus lies one of the highlights of Chicago–Shedd Aquarium. While this isn’t technically a “museum,” the aquarium hosts thousands of species and prides itself on engaging audiences with marine and animal wildlife. The aquarium includes sections of different animals including the Oceanarium, the Caribbean Reef and the Amazon Rising. This aquarium helps audiences learn about conservation and how different animals live in such diverse habitats, all while giving you a breathtaking view of some of the most exotic creatures on earth.

2. The Art Institute of Chicago

If you’re an art junkie (like myself), then this is the place for you. With art from virtually every corner of the world, the Art Institute is home to one of the most comprehensive collections around. The newest addition, the Modern Wing, opened in 2009 and includes works from artists such as Matisse and Kandinsky, among several others. This museum is one of the most popular attractions to visitors of Chicago, but it’s definitely worth the crowds. Since it’s located in downtown Chicago on Michigan Avenue, it’s the perfect place to visit while you’re taking a break from shopping.

1. Museum of Contemporary Art

The MCA focuses on art that has been created since 1945, and includes lecture series connected to different exhibitions as well as theater performances, conferences and classes dedicated to the education of contemporary art. The art in this museum may not seem as accessible to most people, but it gives visitors a new perspective on the arts and how art connects to one’s culture. If the museum is a little too obscure for your taste, the MCA has one of the coolest gift shops in town–from art books to DVDs to retro t-shirts, you can find some great gifts for your friends back home.
