Efferus: A Live Review

Efferus presented some pre-Christmas festivities with their EP Launch Party in December, at Club85 in Hitchin. The four-piece from Stevenage, Hertfordshire, formed in late 2009, and have gained a reputation as a powerful metal / grunge band, with gigs around Hertfordshire and London. Efferus are proud to present their new EP ‘Born to Be’ which is available on iTunes.

This was a great night to kick off my festive season. When I caught up with them after the show, Efferus said: “We really enjoyed it! It was an awesome atmosphere which made it a really good evening.”

Supporting Efferus on the night were Spirytus and Alone with Wolves. Spirytus got things started in style, with an outstanding and energetic performance; these guys really know how to put on a show! Efferus said: “We’d toured with Spirytus earlier this year so we knew what they were like and we knew they’d go down really well.”

Formed in 2004, Spirytus are a metal band from Nottingham, with a funky soulful edge. I was really taken in by their aggressive sound and captivating presence, as they offered something a bit different to your standard metal gig. I’m really impressed with this new find and hope to see them again in the future.

Unfortunately I was less charmed by Alone with Wolves. As they adorned the stage in tinsel, and came out dress in onesies, Santa hats a Batman suit, I had no idea what to expect. I’m afraid for me the Wolves came across as a run-of-the-mill thrash metal band. They gave a lot of noise, with lots going on, but nothing really shining through.

Efferus were pleased with their support and said: “We’d never seen Alone with Wolves in action, but we were really impressed with them too.”

Finally the band we had all been waiting for took the stage. Efferus are strong, tight, with all the pieces coming together well. The final result is pure power, reminiscent of the old-school feels of Korn, but still offering something fresh. They’ve got the power to get a crowd moving and could do wonders with a big venue packed to the brim with metal-heads ready to mosh.

Efferus treated fans to their well-known single ‘Katfish’, remarkable covers, and new songs from their EP. There was a great mix and their performance promised to get people excited for ‘Born to Be’ which I hope is as successful as it deserves!

“It was one of the best gigs of the year for us!” said Efferus. I’ll be keep keeping an eye on the band and I hope to see them go far. Listen to them now and let’s see what 2013 has to offer!
