What to Watch in 2013 – Superhero Movies

Now we’ve survived the apocalypse and everyone’s settling back into their routine with the festivities ended, you’re probably wondering: a) how the hell did that year go by so fast?, b) will I be able to return all of these Christmas socks without a receipt?!  and c) what new movies can I see in 2013?

I can’t help you with the first two questions but I sure can offer some assistance when it comes to 2013 movies. If you’re a frequent cinemagoer, I’ve got you covered as I share the movies you MUST see in the new year and also one’s you should pass on. From comedy, drama, sci-fi and horror, I’ll be providing an extensive and snappy 2013 preview to whet your appetite and damage your pocket!

First up, a genre that dominated the box office in 2012 with movies such as The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises – the superhero movie.

IRON MAN 3

RELEASE DATE: 26th April

STARRING: Robert Downey Jnr, Guy Pearce, Ben Kingsley, Gwyneth Paltrow

FIRST THOUGHTS: Iron Man 3 is the first mega blockbuster of the year and with the character already so well loved due to the previous installments, it’ll surely do well again in the box office. The third entry in the saga see’s Tony Stark do battle with The Mandarin, played by movie legend – Ben Kingsley. The exciting element of this film is its director – Shane Black, who previously worked with Robert Downey Jnr on the brilliantly off-beat action caper, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. After his impressive 2012 with Lawless and Prometheus, the addition of Guy Pearce to the cast is also an exciting one as, let’s face it, the man can do no wrong!

VERDICT: MUST SEE IN THE CINEMA

MAN OF STEEL

RELEASE DATE: 14th June

STARRING: Henry Cavill, Russell Crowe, Amy Adams, Kevin Costner, Michael Shannon

FIRST THOUGHTS: Man of Steel is another attempt at rebooting the Superman franchise. This time it’s Zack Snyder’s turn to see what he can do with Clark Kent and his superhuman abilities. As a director, Snyder has been criticised for his shallow style and his over-reliance on CGI, this is most notable in his 2011 movie Sucker Punch. On the plus side, Christopher Nolan is a producer, so he’s surely had an influence on the visual style. And the cast is highly talented, with Henry Cavill supported by experienced pro’s Russel Crowe and Kevin Costner. With a June release date, Man of Steel will have a lot of summer competition and whether this damages it, we’ll have to wait and see.

VERDICT: POSSIBLY SEE IN THE CINEMA

KICK-ASS 2

RELEASE DATE: 19th July

STARRING: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloe Moretz, Jim Carrey, Christoper Mintz-Plasse

FIRST THOUGHTS: With only 6 months left until its release, fans still haven’t been given a trailer or even a teaser for this highly anticipated sequel. So what do we know about Kick-Ass 2? Firstly, Jim Carrey is a cast member; he’ll play Colonel Stars, a former mob boss turned superhero. We hope his performance is a little better than his turn in Batman Forever… There are also returns for The Red Mist and Hit-Girl with the former out for revenge. Significant changes have been made behind the camera, as rookie director, Jeff Wadlow, has been handed the reigns. With so little to go off though, Kick-ass 2, remains a bit of a mystery.

VERDICT: WAIT FOR A TRAILER

THE WOLVERINE

RELEASE DATE: 26th July

STARRING: Hugh Jackman, Famke Janssen, Will Yun Lee

FIRST THOUGHTS: The Wolverine is another film lacking pre-release material (although there is a 10 second teaser online). The plot will focus on Wolverine’s training with an elite samurai warrior in Japan, and whilst doing so, he engages with a mysterious stranger from his past. (Is it just me or does that sound like Batman Begins?!) Personally, another film focused purely on this character seems unnecessary to me. After the brilliant X-Men: First Class, this feels like a step back for the franchise. After Darren Aronofsky dropped out, directing duties finally fell to James Mangold who’s work includes the Christian Bale western 3:10 to Yuma and Walk the Line, so a very interesting choice from the powers that be.

VERDICT: WAIT FOR A TRAILER
