A Stereotype Future? Do paperback books have a future?

There’s no need to go through what benefits an iPad or any tablet PC brings to reading, be it books, PDFs or article. Why? Because if you aren’t acquainted with the advantages, it means you haven’t tried one. Get yourself along to your nearest Apple store and be prepared to experience the newest revolution in media.

So, if tablets are to replace course books, bestsellers, and newspapers, where does that leave the traditional paperback? I think by the time I retire (in about 40 years), where a Waterstones stands in 2013 you’ll find instead a shop of antiquities selling original paperbacks, finely preserved, at one hell of a price. I can just imagine turning over an elegant edition of the Millennium Trilogy to see some crazy price of £500!

Sound a bit unreal? All the hallmarks of history bear the signs. Only 50 yeas ago ’twas the norm to be fitted for a tailored suit; today, the honour costs an arm and a leg. My mother has a collection of vinyls which she paid threepence for; today, the yuppies are forking out big bucks for the them. Why buy the newest Rolex model for £4,000 when you can procure a vintage 1960 Rolex at £20,000?

Vintage is expensive; the things of yesteryear always come back into fashion. What was popular in the 60’s was sold as junk in the 80’s and rebought as chique and trendy in the 90’s. Our contemporary junk won’t be immune from the eventual à la mode revival, not even the book.
