Why I WON’T be following Glamour magazines’ ‘most wearable Spring trends’

As a fashion lover and keen disciple to the trends of each season, I was eager to see what Glamour magazine online (one of my favourites) had forecasted in their feature; ‘Spring 2013’s Most Wearable Fashion Trends’ by Megan Gustashaw. Imagine my absolute horror when kitten heels, amongst other hideous suggestions, are on the list! Is this a joke? What is happening in the fashion world?

First of all I have a personal hatred for kitten heels, as most Liverpool girls do. WHY wear a heel that barely makes an impact? You would be better off wearing flats, especially considering right now there are so many pretty, embellished dolly shoes that would look great on a night out. To me, wearing high heels not only makes me taller but makes me feel more confident and sets off my outfit perfectly. A pair of Topshop’s finest ultimately make any girl feel glamourous. You never see anyone on the ‘best dressed’ lists sporting kittens do you? Just don’t do it girls! Kitten heels are completely unflattering, look ridiculous and in my opinion aren’t actually fashionable at all. Miaow.

Luxe leather is also on the list of ‘most wearable’ trends of this season. I doubt that this trend would look flattering to any body shape at all! Although the weather in England is still cold, wet and miserable, as we move into Spring the sun will start to appear and it will get warmer (even if it’s only by a few degrees). Clearly Glamour magazine does not recognise this weather change when suggesting we wear luxe leather garments. Leather is one of the hottest fabrics to wear. Could you imagine being stuck in a leather dress in an overcrowded hot bar? If you need more proof why leather is not the best option, just watch the famous episode of the sitcom Friends; The one with all the resolutions, where character Ross Geller buys a pair of leather pants. Comedy gold, but also completely true. Yes, it might look great on a size zero model, but I am not stretching anything containing the word ‘leather’ across my curves! I believe it’s only an acceptable fabric for that statement leather jacket that looks great with any outfit and can last 20 years or obviously, a pair of killer heels.

The worst for me is the bold stripes trend. Why would anyone think this is fashionable? Okay I admit that some striped garments do look good- think a casual striped tee and skinny jeans – but Glamour mag insist that the bolder the better and offer photos of head-to-toe stripes, including coloured fabric with black stripes. This look should be left to Dennis the Menace as far as I’m concerned, it is not a flattering pattern (especially horizontal stripes) and the black stripes on top of coloured fabric will make you look washed out and has quite a gothicc, grungy feel to it- not something I would want for Spring! Another suggestion is black and white stripes which is even worse. I can’t help but think of Pugsley Addams whenever I see black and white stripes; not the best fashion icon! Now don’t get me wrong stripes can work, given the colours compliment each other (and your skin tone) and I would personally prefer thinner or more subtle stripes instead of the bold type that Glamour suggests. One last word of warning though girls, black and white striped leggings are NEVER a good look; they don’t compliment any body shape and you will look like Beetlejuice.

These supposed ‘wearable trends’ have ultimately made me question my trust in fashion magazines, such as Glamour. Just because it looks good on a runway, does not mean it will suit us ‘normal’ girls of all shapes and sizes. Yes I still love hunting for the latest trends and the best bargains, but I think the best approach is to look for things which will suit me- not the model in the magazines.
