Seven interesting ways to personalise your home

The way in which we style our homes is an important thing. Not only does it help to create an environment which will have an effect on our everyday mood but it can tell visitors a lot about us and our personalities. From the furniture we choose to the pictures we display on our wall, most of us put a great deal of thought into the way our home looks.

Personalising our homes is about more than the colour of paint we choose for the walls – it comes down to the smallest of details.

Here, we have a look at seven interesting ways to personalise our homes.

1. Make use of blackboard paint

Blackboard paint is one of the most versatile tools which can be used to personalise the home. Not only can it be used on just about any surface but what you do with the chalk afterwards is entirely up to you.

Consider using blackboard paint to label small items around the kitchen or use it on large areas of the wall for brainstorming ideas and making lists. It’s also great for kids bedrooms if they’re prone to scrawling on the furniture and you can find more great ideas on HGTV with their list of top chalkboard paint ideas.

2. Create your own art

The artwork we put on our walls says a lot about us but never more so than if we produce the artwork ourselves. You don’t have to have Picasso like skills in order to produce something worth hanging on the wall. If you’re struggling for ideas, try collaborating with a friend or search for professional pieces which resemble photographs or drawn pictures to lend an authentic edge.

3. Don’t neglect accessories

The smallest things can sometimes make the biggest of differences. When it comes to home accessories, this is certainly true.

Things like light fittings and fixtures can be the finishing touch your home is waiting for and the Sainsbury’s collection of home accessories is a good place to start looking for unique options.

4. Make collages

Personalising your home isn’t just about making choices of your own – it’s about displaying and cherishing elements of your own life. Making collages of photos starring your closest friends and best memories will not only create some great art for your walls, but it will be a lot of fun putting it together.

5. Put your belongings on show

It’s not only the dedicated decorative items which can contribute to the overall feel of the rooms within your home. Every single thing on show can add to a room’s aesthetic feel. For this reason, it’s not always desirable to hide everything away.

While it’s nice to avoid creating clutter, consider storage units which allow you to keep certain things on display. Your choice of music and books, for example, can add a lot to the style of your home.

6. Let your kids help make decisions

The decoration of your home is a way of expressing yourself and your tastes. If you’ve got kids living at home, why exclude them from the process? Not only is this a great opportunity for you to bond with your kids, but it is a chance for your young ones to exercise a bit of responsibility.

Needless to say, you can reserve the right to the final decision if you’re worried about your living room becoming a shrine to your kid’s favourite book character but Everyday Family has a great post on how to let your kids make decisions which might be useful.

7. Don’t separate functional items

When buying functional items like saucepans, it’s important that you don’t consider them to be entirely separate from the items which buy to decorate your home. As mentioned above, every item on display in your home contributes to the overall style.

If you have the option to pick up a stylish set of saucepans, go for it every time. The same goes for just about every kitchen item – from glasses and crockery to knives and forks, you’ll be surprised at just what can constitute a design feature in your home!
