Being Mary Jane

Finally a show that captures real day to day life of a woman; Being Mary Jane is real with hints of humour to it, but isn’t that what life is?

To know me is to accept the fact that I will always be hooked on a series and since Scandal is out of action, Being Mary-Jane has replaced that spot in my life.

Gabrielle Union portrayal of Mary-Jane is perfect; many Being Mary-Jane viewers will agree that the reason why we have instantly fallen in love with this character is because she is so relatable.

Not only does Mary-Jane portray a hard working black woman but it is fair to say that she is a representation of a woman’s struggle that is in the prime of her career.

Union’s character shows that although we attempt to have it all, maybe we can’t have the fairy-tale desired life of a Morden woman. Which might entail being boss a work, house full of kids and a loving husband by your side.

The series so far has shown the 30 something singleton trying to bag herself a man, have kids and still maintain the position she is in, at her work place as a news reporter.

In one of the episodes, Mary Jane is shown after a hard day at work, to come home and take her bra off. She is also show sitting on the toilet while she calls a friend and chats about her day. All this is relatable to viewers and often in other shows, it’s airbrushed.

The series is only on its third episode and we have seen our beloved Mary Jane, steal a sperm from an ex. Yes, steal a sperm form an ex! And always has made viewers want to cry with her as the man she loves turns out to be married. Yikes!

Being Mary Jane has already become a house hold favourite on social networks, such as twitter and I think it’s purely because we see her vulnerability at an early stage in the show.

As a viewer I have adopted a sister role to the character, shaking my head in disappointment as she makes bad decisions and clapping in triumphs as she does the right thing.

The reason why we love Being Mary Jane so much, simply because it is like watching ourselves in all different forms.
