The Maze Runner (2014) film review

The Maze Runner , similar to The Hunger Games and Divergent, focusses on a group of teenagers who have been placed in an unknown environment where they are being forced to survive. However, they have no memories of who they were before or where they have come from. This adds an interesting and compelling dynamic to the characters and also adds to the sense of mystery throughout the film.

The Maze Runner captures your attention from start to finish. There is not a moment where you will not be on the edge of your seat, waiting to see what happens next as the mystery of the unique environment unfolds. Dylan O’Brien (who also stars in MTV series, Teen Wolf) proves to be the perfect choice for the lead role. He performs Thomas’s curiosity and bravery in a way that is both relatable and admirable. Furthermore, his reactions to the new world such as the confusion and desperation to know the mystery of what is behind the maze, brings a sense of realism to the story.

The teenagers all have distinct and different personalities which allows them to stand out in their own way. For example, whereas Thomas is curious and brave, Gally played by Will Poulter (also known from his role in We’re The Millers) contrasts. It becomes clear that unlike Thomas, he is afraid of change and wants to avoid what is held behind the maze walls- even if it means never escaping the harsh and troublesome land.

The Maze Runner has a compelling and thought provoking plot throughout with a fantastic cast that the audience will easily connect and sympathise with. I will be looking forward to seeing what follows!
