The Dos And Don’ts of Online Dating

Online dating is huge nowadays. It’s thought that 20% of all relationships nowadays start online – and 1 in 6 marriages. Of course, being successful involves understanding some of the basic online dating etiquette. If you’re looking to find that perfect partner online, here are just a few of the important dos and don’ts.

Don’t limit yourself to one dating platform

There are lots of dating platforms out there to choose from. Just like finding a job, the more places you look, the more chance you have of finding a match. There are dating platforms set up to specific demographics such as this Asian dating app that could be perfect if you’ve got a specific type in mind. There are then the many major dating platforms that are also worth using. Most platforms nowadays are free, so you have nothing to lose.

Do consider your profile photo carefully

No matter what you write on your profile, nothing can make up for a bad profile photo. Try to find a photo that sums up you and your personality in the most positive way. Avoid old photographs or photos with other people in which it’s not clear who you are.

Don’t tell lies or hide information

Honesty is the best policy when trying to find a potential future partner. Be up front about your age, your job and whether you have kids. You may not want to shout about certain things on your profile, but you should make sure to tell people these during conversation – either online or on the first date.

Do be open-minded

Don’t be disappointed if you can’t find your dream match. While you shouldn’t attempt to message anyone and everyone, you don’t want to be too picky.

Don’t be afraid to message first

It’s usually men that message first, but there’s no reason as to why women can’t either. If you come across a promising match, don’t let the opportunity go by because you didn’t want to message them first.

Do get to know the person before meeting up

You should try to get to know a person before asking them a date. It will be less awkward meeting up as you’ll have things to talk about. You can also determine whether you really want to go on a date with them.

But don’t keep the conversation going online too long

Messaging back and forth for weeks could result in your potential date eventually losing interest. They could be talking to someone else at the same time and that person may take the initiative to invite them on a date first. Consider the fact that there is also always competition.

Do stick within a 25 mile radius

Unless you live in the middle of nowhere and have limited options, it’s best to keep things local. Long-distance relationships can be successful, but for most people they’re not ideal.

Don’t give up at the first rejection

You’re likely to have to deal with rejection numerous times when online dating. Most of the time people that you’re talking to online will simply stop messaging you. Worse still, you may plan a date only to be stood up when you arrive. The key is to keep trying and not give up.
