3) Blazing Saddles (1974): Directed by Mel Brooks, and starring Gene Wilder, Cleavon Little, Harvey Korman, Slim Pickens, Mel Brooks and many more hilarious stars, this is a western like you’ve never seen before! An enlightenment to political corruption- quite topical at this moment in time wouldn’t you think? (Racial and religious prejudice in the film- I do not agree with it, however the rest of the film is very funny).
4) Uncle Buck (1989): The lovable John Candy stars in a hilarious depiction of a typical family and their relationships with aunts and uncles. Also joining Candy in this movie is Home Alone star, Macaulay Culkin, Amy Madigan, Jean Louisa Kelly, Gabby Hoffmann, Jay Underwood and Laurie Metcalf. After finding out her father has had a heart attack, Cindy Russell (Elaine Bromka) and her husband, Bob Russell (Garrett M. Brown) leave their three children, Miles, Maizy and intolerable Tia, in the capable hands of their larger than life, Uncle Buck (Candy), Bob’s brother. A heart-warming comedy which can be enjoyed by all!
5) Brewster’s Millions (1985): Another film with Richard Pryor and John Candy; Brewster’s Millions is based on the novel coincidentally called ‘Brewster’s Millions’ (I am joking it isn’t a coincidence…) , which was written by George Barr McCutcheon in 1902. The 1985 release of the film took the number of adaptions of the book to 7. Brewster (Pryor), has been left $30 million, which he has to spend in 30 days in order to receive an inheritance left to him of $300 million by his uncle who he’s never met. His best friend, Spike Nolan (Candy) is kept in the dark and does not know of Brewster’s fortune- does he succeed? Watch to find out!
I chose these films as they are all very similar and it was almost like an ‘iTunes Genius’ approach, in that I formulated my selection by picking the same genre, but focused heavily on the actors in the films.
