Peplum Perfection: Going in for the Frill

It’s a trend which has endured many an enthusiastic revival, as well as regular descents into obscurity in equal measure since its first outing in the 1940’s, despite its versatility and inherent stylishness.

Now, it’s back once again, slowly creeping into view throughout Autumn/Winter 2011/2012, and finally exploding onto the scene and the catwalk for the Spring/Summer 2012 season, gracing the pages of every fashion website and magazine in sight!

The concept is simple: a neat, nipped in waist to give definition and slim the silhouette, coupled with the outward flare of a frilled embellishment to give the wearer the hourglass figure coveted by women the world over.  The peplum’s claim to fame lies within its ability to adapt; it gives skinny girls a feminine shape, but is as equally successful in accentuating a curvier figure.  The style is a godsend for hiding a multitude of sins, particularly those agonized over by women for as long as none of us care to remember!
Most frequently, its rightful place is the waistline of a dress, but since its restoration onto the fashion radar it’s also been used extensively on coats, skirts and tops, giving the women of today every chance to embrace this promising style.

How to perfect the peplum:

Slender girls can really explore the peplum in all of its forms, be it a dramatically oversized flared creation, or a simple yet chic one. A peplum top worn over leather look leggings is a very adaptable look; perfect for nights on the town when teamed with skyscraper heels or just as easily at home on the high-street with a pair of cute ballet pumps or sandals. Another gorgeous outfit idea is coupling a bodycon peplum skirt with another huge summer trend, the bralet or crop top, allowing the wearer to flash a bit of flesh without being too over the top.

For curvier girls, the peplum comes into its own when worn in a classic, fitted style. As opposed to adding volume, the shape will only emphasize an hourglass figure. For formal and casual occasions alike, a peplum top worn over tailored trousers is a universally elegant choice; or alternatively a tailored peplum dress cinched at the waist with a belt can be worn easily during the day with opaque tights and flats, or just with heels and some statement jewellery for an evening out.

Whatever shape you are, you can work this trend. A coat or blazer with added peplum detail is a smart yet stylish choice all year round, and a casual peplum skirt and loose tee with a denim jacket is a gorgeous look for holidays!

Whichever look you go for, it’s certain that the constant reimagining of this trend pays homage to its adaptability and refusal to fade from our wardrobes for good. So don’t be afraid to embrace it, after all, it’s practically an investment…
