Bringing Caribbean Music To The Mainstream Listener

Trinbagonian recording artist Konata released his debut single ‘This Is The Life’ through One Island Music on 30th July 2013.

‘This Is The Life’ is exactly what summer sounds like. As soon as the track kicks in, you’re presented with a beat that immediately transports you to a tropical beach, filled with people singing and laughing. As Konata chimes in with “Wake up in the morning and today I’ll have a real good time,” you just know this is one of many lyrics that is going to infect your mind and seep deep into your dancing soul. Not only does this song entertain, it brings a taste of Caribbean culture and music to the mainstream listener. This is something the current UK music chart is desperately lacking, which is where Konata’s calypso infused ‘This Is The Life’ excels on many levels.

Born in Port-Of-Spain, Trinidad, Konata found his love for music at an early age by performing as a trumpet player as part of the National Youth Orchestra of Trinidad and Tobago and the Queen’s Royal College Concert Band. Thriving in a creative environment and embracing his Caribbean roots, the talented musician eventually joined the calypso stage band ‘Caution’, which is where he added back-up vocalist and musical arranger to his ever-growing portfolio.

It was after a brief study of Physics as a major at the University of The West Indies that Konata realised life had only one path for him: music. Identifying a gap in the market, he moved to the United Kingdom to pursue his passion. Deciding to build a solid foundation for his blossoming career, Konata took a break from performing to attain a degree in Arts Management from London South Bank University. Doing this to move closer to his aim of starting his own independent record label, he then went on to study Audio Engineering at the world-famous School of Audio Engineering London.

Upon gaining his qualifications, Konata was ready to put his skills into practice. During this time and for the next four years following his graduation from LSBU, Konata worked as an Event Manager and DJ/MC. He also worked with some of London’s top venues, including HMV Hammersmith and Alexandra Palace and media outlets such as BBC 1xtra and MTV Base.

After gaining a vast array of industry knowledge and experience, it was in 2010 that Konata moved towards re-launching his solo career. As well as touring the UK, Europe and Trinidad, the ambitious performer also produced several singles and music videos which specifically targeted the UK Caribbean market.

Fun, catchy and full of energy, Konata has produced a song that is sure to be on everybody’s summer playlist. Take a listen for yourself and you’ll see what I mean.
