Great Britain has provided a truly outstanding location for the 2012 Olympic Games and all the people involved have shown the utmost enthusiasm; athletes, visitors, employees and volunteers. The opening ceremony was a phenomenal display outlining Britain’s extensive history; showcasing the highs and lows. Last night, the closing ceremony brought closure to the first half of the Olympic Games while celebrating the tremendous successes and medal wins. The past few weeks, without a doubt, has been a gripping display of some of the UK’s most dedicated and hardworking athletes performing to the highest standard. We can definitely say ‘we are proud to be British!

In particular the sailing venue, Weymouth and Portland, has been the hub of activity for all of the sailing events. Of course you will not have missed the fantastic win by 35-year old Ben Ainslie who has won the most dedicated sailor, replacing Denmark’s Paul Elvstrom. The sailing events saw Britain win one gold medal and three silver medals; a fantastic achievement to say the least.

The sailing will be sure to inspire many people; both young and old. The coverage of the events has expressed the sport in such a beautiful, dramatic and tantalising way. The stunning scenery of Weymouth is complemented by the wonderfully crafted boats (laser radial, dinghys, elliotts, 49ers, RS:X) and their sailors. The athlete village will also prove beneficial to Weymouth with the facilities being converted into homes, including 25% being registered for social housing needs. All of the houses are energy efficient using low carbon with the heating, hot water comes from a heating system and many houses are fitted with rainwater harvesting.

“Inspire a generation.” A fitting slogan, one which perfectly shows the direction sport will now take.
