Murders and executions – Patrick Bateman comes to the stage

Fans of thrillers and theatre – rejoice! The cult classic American Psycho is being turned into a musical and will be opening at The Almeida Theatre in London, December 2013! Manhattan investment banker Patrick Bateman just loves his 80’s pop music – and killing his friends – so this looks set to be a delightfully twisted stage version.

The production is being led by author of the original book American Psycho, Bret Easton Ellis. He has just finished filming ‘The Canyons’, starring international train-wreck Lindsay Lohan, alongside actual porn star James Deen (not his real name) and if you’ve heard what went on on-set, you can tell this guy’s not afraid of a challenge.

He is also being helped out by bookwriter Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, artistic director Rupert Goold and Duncan Sheik, a composer and lyricist best known for the award-winning score from Spring Awakening.

The project is being funded via Kickstarter, which seems to be the best way of raising money if you have a massive fan base but can’t get a big company to take you seriously. I’m sure Bret Easton Ellis saw the success that Rob Thomas has had with funding the Veronica Mars Movie, which reached its $2m target in less than a day. These guys are only asking for $150,000 and are offering some amazing incentives to help you part with your cash.

Reservations at Dorsia, anyone? It’ll only cost you $5000! If that’s a little bit out of your budget there are a lot of more affordable incentives on offer for MP3 downloads, t-shirts and signed copies of the book. Even if you only donate $1 you’ll get email updates about the show’s progress, and you can feel involved!

There has been no news yet about who is going to be cast as Patrick Bateman in the musical, although I’m hoping for Aaron Tveit – charismatic, attractive and he’s got great hair!

The Kickstarter is staying open until May 24 and tickets for the show are on sale from May 7.

I’d be sure to bring a raincoat, ‘cause it’s going to get crazy!
